The origin of the Kaaba
Sailing through the history of
Arabian Peninsula shows clearly how the Ka’ba in Makkah and other Ka'aba in the
Arabian Peninsula originated. You might think the Ka’aba in Makkah it’s the
only one?
After the transfer of the Prophet
Muhammad from Mecca to Al-Madina, he strengthened and grew up his gang, and
then he was able to eliminate any other Ka’aba to be Mecca’s Kaaba is the only
one, and this is a kind of patriotism and the human affiliation of Muhammad to the
place of birth.
Every year, more than 30 million
Muslims from all over the world, arrive in Saudi Arabia to perform pilgrimage
“Hajj and Omrah”. In anticipation of the blessing and forgiveness of Allah,
they are performing rituals that have no purpose or meaning, as if the Lord
exists only in this place without the rest of the places.
Reading through the history of
Islam one can determine that, the Ka’aba originated long before Islam and it
has nothing to do with Islam, and the purpose behind it was merely an economic
benefit to the people who own the land that the Ka’aba was located in. People
come to the Ka’aba from various locations to perform pilgrimage and buying
gifts for their loved ones, thinking that everything from this place is blessed
by gods. The researchers say that the Arabian Peninsula before the advent of
Islam was a group of tribes that are not governed by any authority except the
tribal tradition, which differs in turn, from one tribe to another. And with
the multiplicity of tribes, many heroes arose, those who converted after their
death to holy ancestors and their grandchildren gave them statues and mihrabs
to seek their help, whenever they suffered a calamity, and for those righteous
ancestors, the houses of worship were established and ways of approaching the
gods or ancestors began. And then the number of gods and heroes multiplied, as
a result, the houses of worship such as the Ka’aba multiplied as well. (Mihrab:
a niche in the wall of a mosque, at the point nearest to Mecca, toward which
the congregation faces to pray).
The Kaaba (the "cube
building") was the preferred architectural form of the houses of the
forefathers before the advent of Islam, and sometimes these Kaabas were set
aside for rare and exotic stones, such as volcanic or meteorite stones, both of
which were predominantly black due to combustion factors. This sanctification
is a product of the stone form, coming from an unknown metaphysical world. The
volcanic rock is a rock formed from magma erupted from a volcano. However, many
legends were told regarding the exotic rare stones, like they are coming from a
world of exalted past spirits. As well as the meteorite stone, and perhaps more
majestic for the fact that it was reaching the earth amidst its manifestations
a heavenly celebration to tug at the core of the simple Arab Bedouin, which is
swiftly descending, superfluous, by contacting the Earth's atmosphere it
ignites behind it a huge trail, so it was sensational in the perception of the
simple Arab Bedouin thought they fell
from the houses and the throne of the gods in the sky carrying with it the
shine of this lighted place, therefore, it was normal to be believed that this
stone is the reverence and blessing.
And with the multitude of stones
coming from the ancestors or descending from the sky as believed then, the
number of Kaabas also multiplied, and
about the Kaaba and the pilgrimage of the Arabs says Professor Mahmoud Salim
Al-Hout it should not occur to anyone, that Makkah and its position from other
places of worship, is the only destination in the Arabian Peninsula, as the
Arabs had many other Kaabas to pilgrimage to in certain seasons, offering them
vows and gifts and wandering around them, and then leaving them after they had
done all the religious duty required and all this happened before the
appearance of Islam.
What distinguished Mecca from the
rest of the holy places, that Mecca was the center of the caravans in the
remote areas between the south and the north and east and west, and these
houses were sacred and have a number of sacred days, such as what is happening
in Makkah now, but the house of Makkah specifically took the distinction,
because the site of Mecca is great on the caravan routes and we will see later
when Muhammad appears and seize the opportunity and declare himself a prophet,
to keep on the Kaaba and to put his verses, which support all the rituals of
the Kaaba in Makkah and then after a period of time he transfers from Mecca to
Al-Madina, were he strengthened and grew up his gang, then he was able to
eliminate any other Ka’aba to be Mecca’s Kaaba alone, and this is a kind of
patriotism reflecting the human affiliation to the place of birth.
